## Approvals

![Abstract image of the IACUC review process](/sites/g/files/omnuum5396/files/styles/hwp_1_1__360x360_scale/public/2024-10/Review%20Process%20Icons%202.png?itok=KnblN_Ck)

You must wait for the IACUC to **notify** you of approval before starting animal work - E-IACUC will automatically generate an approval letter and send out an email notification upon approval. Contact the [Office of the IACUC](mailto:IACUC@hms.harvard.edu) for confirmation if unsure.

Approved IACUC protocols are only valid for 3 years from the initial approval date. **Amendment** approvals do not change the protocol's approval period. In fact, the approval period for a protocol can [never](https://olaw.nih.gov/faqs#/guidance/faqs?anchor=50313) be extended beyond its original expiration date. In order to continue animal work, the protocol must undergo another *complete* IACUC review by submitting a separate **three-year renewal** application. This process will create a new IACUC protocol that supersedes the previous protocol upon approval. Animal activities in the absence of valid approval are serious and reportable violations of the [PHS Policy](https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-05-034.html).

### Working with Hazardous Materials

While IACUC approval covers the animal work described on the protocol, the use of **biological agents** also requires separate [COMS approval](/services#coms). Both are needed in order to work with *COMS regulated materials* in animals on campus.

Furthermore, you must communicate and coordinate with [HCCM](https://iacuc.hms.harvard.edu/services#hccm) on the use of hazardous materials in the vivaria (including **microbiological agents classified as Biosafety Level 2** or above, **toxic chemicals**, or **radioactive substances**).

### Ordering Animals

All animal orders must be placed with HCCM. This can be done through the [**E-Sirius**](https://harvard.esirius.cayuse.com) procurement system. Visit [HCCM](https://iacuc.hms.harvard.edu/services#hccm) to learn more.
